Events happened last week may give a better idea how Turkey is proceeding to EU.
Last Week In Turkey
Some events happened last week may give a better idea about the circumstances in Turkey both from the view point of business and politics. These are as follows:
1. Romano Prodi, the chair of the European Commission, visited Turkey’s president, prime minister and the opposition party leaders. He made a speech at the Turkish Grand Assembly and applauded by all audiences. He left Turkey with very affirmative impressions both he has gotten and given. Prodi was the first chair who visited Turkey in last 40 years.
2. Günther Verheugen stated that Turkey’s candidacy for EU membership has come to an unreturnable point.
3. Istanbul Stock Exchange Index scored record high level in its history by slightly exceeding 20,000 and then backed to 18K something.
4. Last year, the annual value of the exportation exceeded $50 billion for the first time in the history.
5. US dollar/Euro conversion rate in the local money market was backed a little but it is still more than 1/1.2.
6. Tupraş’s privatization attempts almost came to an end. The bid was completed and the highest price was $1.3 billion made by a Turkish-Russian Joint venture. Probably the decision will be approved in the next week.
7. The public reform bill was discussed at the Parliament last week. This week the incentive law amendments will be discussed at the Partliament. The incentives that are planned for those cities whose per capita incomes are under $1,500 will be on the agenda.
8. A new coalition government took the office last week in Cypress. The new coalition government is pro EU one and claimed to be looking for a solution in the frame of Annan Plan asserted for long lasting Cypress Issue. Mr Denktas, the leader of Turkish Cypriots, has also accepted very surprisingly the search for a solution within the Annan Plan.
9. An investigation has begun about the corruptions that are claimed to be existing at the supreme courts, and relationships among some judges, lawyers and businessmen. The investigation was ended and no evidences was found.
These developments show that Turkey is proceeding politically and economically in the right way and also striving to reach a high level clean and intellectual social and economic life.
